Teach English abroad for Americans

Want to teach English abroad as an American? Start with the job, not the fantasy.

A US passport can open useful English-teaching routes, but every country has its own visa and employment rules. TEFL is one part of the application, not a magic permission slip.

StudyTEFL helps you build the teaching knowledge and certification needed for suitable entry-to-mid-level TEFL jobs, without making you pay hundreds of dollars before you've even bought a plane ticket.

Can Americans teach English abroad?

Yes, but “American + TEFL” isn't the whole eligibility test.

Schools and immigration authorities can separately look at your degree, citizenship, criminal background, experience, document legalisation and other requirements. Those rules vary by country and job.

Do I need TEFL?

Many entry-level English-teaching jobs require or prefer TEFL training, but there isn't one worldwide rule.

Do I need a degree?

Not to take StudyTEFL. Some major overseas programs and visa routes do require a bachelor's degree.

Does a US passport help?

US citizenship can meet nationality requirements for some programs, but it doesn't replace the rest of the eligibility criteria.

Can I go without experience?

Many entry-level roles are aimed at new teachers. Individual schools decide what experience they expect.

Will $39 TEFL be enough?

It can be for jobs accepting standard privately accredited online TEFL. If a vacancy names another qualification, follow the vacancy.

What about documents?

Your destination may ask for legalised qualifications or background checks. StudyTEFL certificates can use a UK apostille route when required.

Choose your route

Where could an American start looking?

Don't choose a country from a list of “easy TEFL destinations” and assume you qualify. Use the country as a starting point, then check the current visa and employer requirements.

Japan: a clear example of why requirements matter.

For the 2027 JET Program through the United States, applicants must be US citizens and complete a bachelor's degree by June 25, 2027. JET says TEFL or TESL background may help an application, but it doesn't replace the degree requirement. Private employers can have different criteria.

Popular starting points

Research the visa first. Then match your TEFL to the job.

Japan

Structured programs + private schools

JET's 2027 US eligibility includes US citizenship and a bachelor's degree. TEFL can strengthen teaching preparation, but it doesn't replace JET's degree rule.

South Korea

Public and private routes

A major market for US teachers. Check the current visa and employer requirements before accepting a contract.

Taiwan

Schools and language centers

Taiwan has formal work-permit rules for foreign professionals and language teaching. Eligibility depends on the role and permit route.

Vietnam

Private-language market

Confirm current qualification, document and work-permit rules before departure.

Thailand

Schools across the country

TEFL is useful preparation, but employment and visa eligibility remain separate.

Online first

Build confidence before moving

Use TEFL to apply for suitable online teaching work while planning a later move abroad.

Before you apply

What should an American check?

Treat TEFL certification as one item in the application file. Check the rest before paying deposits, booking flights or sending original documents.

Passport and nationality eligibility
Bachelor's degree requirement
Employer's TEFL-hour requirement
Named qualification requirements
Background-check requirements
Visa and work-permit route
Document apostille or legalisation
Salary, housing and contract terms
Apostille for Americans teaching abroad

Your StudyTEFL certificate is UK-issued, even when you're American.

That can make the TEFL certificate's legalisation route quite straightforward. Your nationality doesn't turn a UK-issued certificate into a US document.

If your destination requires an apostille, StudyTEFL's professional UK partner can handle solicitor certification and the UK FCDO apostille process from the digital certificate. You don't have to fly to Britain to arrange it.

Your US degree, FBI background check or other American documents follow their own authentication rules. Keep those processes separate from the StudyTEFL certificate.

Which TEFL should you buy?

Buy for the jobs you're targeting, not for the biggest price tag.

If the jobs you want accept standard accredited online TEFL, StudyTEFL gives you 120 hours of training, real ESL lesson footage, practical scenarios, tutor support and certification for $39.

If an employer explicitly asks for CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, an Ofqual-regulated Level 5 qualification or supervised observed teaching practice, choose the qualification it asks for.

Important: TEFL certification doesn't guarantee a job, visa or work permit. Governments and employers make the final eligibility decisions.
