Can Canadians teach English abroad?

Yes, but your passport is only one part of the application.

Schools and immigration authorities can separately look at citizenship, degree status, TEFL training, background checks, language ability, work permits and document legalisation.

Do I need TEFL?

Many entry-level jobs require or prefer it, but there isn't one universal worldwide rule.

Do I need a degree?

Not to take StudyTEFL. Some major overseas programs and visa routes require at least a bachelor's degree.

Does Canadian citizenship help?

Yes for some programs. Canada is one of the designated English-speaking nationalities accepted by major schemes such as EPIK.

Can I apply without experience?

Many entry-level schools recruit new teachers. Individual employers decide how much experience they want.

Is 120-hour TEFL enough?

It can meet the TEFL requirement for many suitable roles, but always check the exact vacancy.

Do I need an apostille?

Sometimes. Your StudyTEFL certificate and your Canadian-issued documents follow different legalisation routes.

Choose your route

Where could a Canadian teacher start looking?

The best destination is the one where your profile actually meets the current legal and employment requirements.

South Korea: a strong route for eligible Canadian graduates.

EPIK currently lists Canada among its eligible nationalities. Applicants need at least a bachelor's degree, and those without an education-related degree need a TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certificate of at least 100 hours from an accredited provider.

Popular destinations

Match the qualification to the country, not the other way around.

South Korea

EPIK and private schools

Canadian citizens are eligible for EPIK if they meet its other requirements. A bachelor's degree is required, and many applicants need 100+ hours of accredited TEFL/TESOL/CELTA.

Japan

JET and private employers

Japan is a major destination for Canadian teachers. JET operates a Canada-specific application route, while private employers set their own requirements.

Taiwan

Schools and language centers

Taiwan has formal work-permit rules for foreign-language teaching. Check the current role and permit requirements before accepting a job.

Vietnam

Large private-language market

Check current work-permit, degree and document requirements before departure. Requirements can change.

Thailand

Schools across the country

TEFL is useful preparation, but school and visa eligibility remain separate. Verify both before you travel.

Build experience remotely while deciding whether you actually want to relocate.

Before you apply

What should Canadian applicants prepare?

A little preparation makes job applications faster and helps you avoid employers that don't understand their own visa process.

You can inspect the learning style before paying. The point is to help you learn how to teach, not simply hand you a PDF certificate after a sequence of true-false questions.

Documents and apostilles

Canadian documents stay Canadian. The StudyTEFL certificate stays UK-issued.

Canada's Apostille Convention entered into force on January 11, 2024, which simplified recognition of Canadian documents abroad.

Your Canadian degree, RCMP criminal-record check and other Canadian-issued documents follow the Canadian apostille route through the appropriate Canadian authority.

Your StudyTEFL certificate is different. It's UK-issued, so if legalisation is required it follows the UK route. StudyTEFL's partner can arrange solicitor certification and the UK FCDO apostille remotely.

Where StudyTEFL fits

Use $39 TEFL where standard accredited online TEFL is enough.

StudyTEFL's 120-hour Complete TEFL is privately accredited and designed for broad entry-to-mid-level online and overseas teaching roles.

A useful real-world example: EPIK currently accepts accredited online TEFL/TESOL/CELTA courses of at least 100 real-time hours for applicants who need that training requirement. StudyTEFL's 120-hour course is designed to sit comfortably above that minimum hour threshold.

If a job asks for CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, Level 5 or another specific qualification, choose the qualification it asks for.
