Teach English In Africa: Explore Jobs, Countries And Employers

Africa isn't one TEFL market. Morocco and Egypt have substantial private language and international-school sectors, while countries where English is already widely used often have fewer conventional entry-level ESL roles for foreign teachers.

Compare the markets below, then use the country filters to find employers, recruiters and local job boards that match where you'd actually like to teach.

Before you apply
Check whether you're looking at an ESL job or a school-teaching job.

A private language centre and an international school may sit in the same city but ask for completely different qualifications. Read the vacancy carefully before spending money on a course or documentation.

Where could you teach?

Choose a country that fits your qualifications and goals.

Your strongest options depend on your degree, teaching experience, nationality, language skills and the kind of classroom you want to work in.

Competitive local market

South Africa

Johannesburg · Cape Town · Pretoria · Durban

South Africa has a large domestic English-speaking workforce, so it is not a classic high-demand foreign-TEFL destination. Opportunities are more likely to appear in tutoring, online teaching, private education and professional school settings.

Language-centre routes

Morocco

Casablanca · Rabat · Marrakech · Tangier

Morocco has private language centres, international schools and major English-education organisations. French or Arabic can help with daily life and some workplaces, while employer requirements vary widely.

Large education market

Egypt

Cairo · Alexandria · New Cairo

Egypt has a large private education sector, language centres and international schools. Standard TEFL may fit some adult or language-centre roles, while international schools commonly ask for professional teaching credentials.

Smaller local market

Tunisia

Tunis · Sousse · Sfax

Tunisia has language institutes, training organisations and private education. The market is smaller than Egypt or Morocco, so direct searches through local employment platforms can be especially useful.

Education and project roles

Rwanda

Kigali and education projects

English is an official language in Rwanda, and opportunities can appear in schools, training organisations and development programmes. Many roles are specialised, so check experience and work-permission requirements carefully.

Specialist routes matter

Kenya & Tanzania

Nairobi · Mombasa · Dar es Salaam · Arusha

Both countries already have substantial English use and local teaching workforces. Foreign applicants are more likely to find specialised school, international education, training or project roles than generic entry-level ESL work.

Apply carefully. A listing site can contain excellent employers and poor ones at the same time. Check the school or company independently, get salary and hours in writing, and never assume a job includes visa sponsorship unless the employer says so.

What qualification will you need?

A 120-hour TEFL can open some doors. Other jobs ask for more.

Language centres and tutoring

For private English-language teaching, employers may look for fluent English, a bachelor's degree, TEFL/TESOL preparation and teaching ability. The exact combination differs by country and employer.

When a vacancy asks for standard 120-hour TEFL, you can use that requirement to guide your course choice.

International and private schools

Many school positions are professional K-12 teaching jobs. They may ask for a BEd, PGCE/PGDE, teaching licence and classroom experience. A standard TEFL certificate should not be treated as a substitute for those credentials.

Before accepting an offer

Compare the real working conditions, not just the location.

Ask what your week actually looks like

Check contact hours, preparation time, split shifts, weekend work, class sizes, curriculum support and whether meetings or marking are paid. An hourly rate means little until you know what counts as paid work.

Check the legal route

Ask the employer what visa or work permit you need and which documents must be authenticated. Requirements can depend on your nationality, role and country, so use official immigration guidance for the final check.
