Teach English In Europe: Find The Route That Fits You

Europe can look easy from the outside because English is widely taught, but your passport and right to work can matter just as much as your TEFL certificate.

Compare the major markets below, then use the filters to find official programmes, public employment services and local job boards for the countries that interest you.

The Europe question to answer first
Can you legally work there?

EU/EEA citizens have a major advantage inside the EU. Non-EU applicants may need employer sponsorship, a specific visa or an official programme route. Check that before assuming a country is open simply because language schools exist.

Where could you teach?

Start with work rights, then compare the teaching market.

Private academies, public assistant programmes and international schools can all sit in the same country while operating under completely different hiring rules.

Assistant programme + academies

Spain

Madrid · Barcelona · Valencia · Seville

Spain combines private academies with a large public language-assistant route. The official 2026-27 programme accepted graduates or university students from participating countries and placed assistants across public schools.

Assistant route + private market

Italy

Rome · Milan · Bologna · Florence

Italy has private language schools, international schools and language-assistant routes. The 2026-27 assistant programme runs from October to May, while private employers set their own qualifications.

Formal assistant programme

France

Paris · Lyon · Toulouse · Bordeaux

France has a formal language-assistant programme alongside private language schools, tutoring and international education. Work rights and French-language ability can materially affect your options.

Strong local job boards

Czechia

Prague · Brno · Ostrava

Czechia has a visible English-language job market, especially in Prague. Current Expats.cz listings include English-language teaching roles, while non-EU applicants need to check work-permission rules carefully.

Large private market

Poland

Warsaw · Kraków · Wrocław · Gdańsk

Poland has a large private language-school and tutoring market. Current Pracuj.pl searches show hundreds of English-teacher and instructor adverts, although employer expectations vary widely.

Local hiring is important

Portugal

Lisbon · Porto · Braga · Algarve

Portugal has language centres, private schools and tutoring. Current Net-Empregos searches show numerous English-teaching vacancies, but local pay and cost of living need to be compared carefully.

Professional & freelance routes

Germany

Berlin · Munich · Hamburg · Frankfurt

Germany has adult-language training, tutoring and international-school opportunities, but standard TEFL is only one part of the market. Work rights and German-language ability often matter.

Academies + tutoring

Greece

Athens · Thessaloniki · islands

Greece has private language schools and tutoring, with hiring often tied to the academic year. Local work rights, recognition rules and employer requirements need to be checked before moving.

Use local-language search terms too. EURES notes that vacancy descriptions are often imported in the employer's national language, so searching only for “English teacher” can miss jobs. Try local terms for teacher, language instructor and tutor as well.

Public assistant programmes

Some of Europe's most accessible routes are programmes rather than jobs ads.

Spain

Spain's official 2026-27 language-assistant programme accepted citizens from a long list of partner countries. New applicants generally needed a degree or to have completed at least two years of university, with country-specific requirements layered on top.

If you qualify, this can be a clearer route than cold-applying to academies from overseas.

France and Italy

France runs an official foreign-language assistant programme through France Education International. Italy also has formal assistant placements for eligible applicants through bilateral arrangements, including current 2026-27 routes.

These programmes have their own nationality, education and application rules, so use the official pages rather than generic advice.

Private language schools

TEFL can help, but your passport may decide the route.

If you already have EU/EEA work rights

You can apply much more freely across private academies and tutoring markets. Poland, Czechia, Portugal, Spain and Italy all have active local job boards where English-teaching roles appear regularly.

If you need sponsorship

Do not assume every language school can sponsor you. Start with official assistant programmes, international employers or vacancies that explicitly discuss work permission. A TEFL certificate cannot replace the legal right to work.
