Requirements to teach English in Mexico
What schools in Mexico ask for.
Degree
Not required by Mexican law or for the work visa. Language schools often hire without one, but bilingual schools, universities and many corporate clients prefer it.
English level
You don't need to be a native speaker. Schools hire fluent speakers of any nationality, and a TEFL certificate helps show you can teach.
TEFL certificate
A 120-hour TEFL is the usual standard for language schools. Extra training in young learners or Business English helps you stand out.
Background check
Not required by immigration law, but some schools ask for one. Have a recent police check ready, just in case.
Mexico work visa for English teachers
How the work visa works, step by step.
Teachers work on a temporary resident visa with permission to work. Your employer starts the process, so the job offer comes first.
- 1
Get a job offer
From a school registered with Mexico's immigration institute (INM). Many teachers interview in person or online first.
- 2
Your employer applies
The school files your work permission with INM. When it's approved, you receive a reference number.
- 3
Visit a Mexican consulate
Apply for your temporary resident visa at a Mexican consulate, normally in your home country.
- 4
Enter Mexico
Travel on your new visa. You can't legally start work before this, including on a visitor permit.
- 5
Swap it for your card
Within 30 days of arriving, exchange the visa for a temporary resident card at an INM office. It is usually valid for a year and renewable.
Check the latest requirements with your school, the Mexican consulate and Mexico's immigration institute (INM) before you travel. Expect government fees of several hundred US dollars in the first year.
When and where to look
Hiring seasons and the main cities.
When schools hire
- June to August, before the school year starts in August or September
- December, before the January term
- All year at language schools, which take new students in rolling intakes
- Quiet times: Christmas, New Year and Easter week (Semana Santa)
Where the jobs are
Most openings are in Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Querétaro and Mérida. Big cities pay more but cost more; smaller cities are cheaper to live in.
Before you accept an offer
- Ask for a formal contract. It includes a year-end bonus (aguinaldo) of at least 15 days' pay and public healthcare (IMSS).
- Confirm the school will sponsor your visa.
